Zombies, Run!

The most inventive and original way to spice up your workout

Keeping your workouts entertaining is one of life’s most difficult bugbears. We all want to go for a run or make sure we do some exercise on a daily basis, but when the mind isn’t willing, more often than not it will be put off till tomorrow. Zombies, Run! hopes to try and change all that. One of the most ingenious apps we’ve had the pleasure of toying around with for some time, Zombies, Run! makes any cardio session exceptionally fun by putting you in the middle of a zombie apocalypse. Yep, you read correctly.

As soon as you begin your run, a story will start to play out, explaining the situation around you and how civilisation as you know it may be about to fall to its knees. The real twist, though, comes when the undead start to chase you. Functioning in the same fashion as interval training does – increasing your speed and effort to its maximum for short bursts – you’ll have to leg it away from danger as fast as you can or fail the mission. It’s an absolutely excellent way to make you speed up, because you genuinely have people in your ear screaming about the dangers that are closing in on you. Sure they’re imaginary, but posses the power to suspend your disbelief and you’ll be in awe of how well it can work. Obviously someone yelling into your ear as you pretend to run for your life isn’t going to stimulate you forever, so Zombies, Run! has also tried to give you a reason to get your heartbeat pumping time and time again. The more successful you are in-game relates to the amount of items you’ll be rewarded once your session comes to an end. Along with helping to expand your central base, it’s also up to you to decide how to distribute these pick-ups. It could be to group of soldiers to fend off the horde, or a doctor so they have more medical supplies. All the choices you make regarding items will be replicated when you get back outdoors by altering the narrative.

All-in-all, then, it’s a brilliant way to try and keep motivated and fit It’s a fair price to pay for an app that may just be the key to getting you in shape and Android users will be able to enjoy it too as of 14 June, which is great news.
