Tweet & Grow

Grow your own virtual plants with the help of social networking

Simulation games are perfect for smartphones. You can nurture your farm/city/puppy/miscellaneous subject, and keep popping back to see how they are progressing, whether you’re on the bus, at home, or on your lunch break at work.

With Tweet & Grow, your task is to grow your own digital plant life, following the advice from the experts at Kew Gardens. You can rain on your plant, bring out the sunshine, or put it under a heat lamp, depending on what caring tips the app gives you, and if left unattended, the plant will wither and die. You get medals for reaching certain growths, which also come with prizes, such as coffee shop discounts.

The quirk to this app, however, is its integration with Twitter. You can unlock plants and mystery buttons from codes given out on Kew’s Twitter feed (and also from Kew Gardens itself) and tweeting your plant ‘tend’ messages fills up your Plant Boost Bottle. The Twitter elements really increase this app’s appeal.

The downsides of Tweet & Grow are that you can only grow one plant at a time. If you chose another it will deactivate the original, but you can go back to it another time. The app also only works in landscape, and as you can only apply ten ‘tend’ buttons everyday, the longevity is short.

This is a great way to learn about different plants and their needs, but the app is short on things to do, so only holds novel appeal to plant enthusiasts and little more.

Rated 3 out of 5

An educational app that’s fun for a short while, but it needs more features to maintain its audience.
