Transformers G1: Awakening

More than meets the eye…

As if seeing the classic Eighties-style Transformers turning up in an iPhone game wasn’t enough of a pleasant surprise, the fact that they’ve appeared in lovingly rendered 3D form in an excellent Advance Wars-style turn-based strategy game should be enough to send fans into  ts of ecstasy. The single-player focus is the story mode, which follows the Autobots and Decepticons through a series of scenarios based loosely on the cartoons. The story itself is pure fluff, of course, but it’s fairly inoffensive nonsense and provides a few twists to the formula beyond a requirement to wipe out the enemy.

Those looking for something more geared towards pick-up-and-play accessibility will find what they’re looking for in the Cybertron Arena, which is a straightforward skirmish mode, playable against human or CPU opponents. Alternatively, the similarly bite-sized Showdown mode will be of interest to fans, offering a range of character-based challenges to test your strategic abilities. Far from being a cash-in, Awakening is one of the best turn-based strategy games on the iPhone and comes highly recommended.

An excellent and good-looking game, whose desirable licence comes second to great gameplay
