The Sonnets By William Shakespeare

The Sonnets By William Shakespeare

A great insight into the work of the bard himself

Much more than just a simple education tool, The Sonnets by William Shakespeare is a beautifully interactive and immersive experience of some of Shakespeare’s most famous works, performed by prominent stage and television actors, and members of the Royal Shakespeare Company. Each performance has its own quirks and each performer their own delivery style, and that’s really what makes this app so enjoyable to use and learn from. The app itself goes one better than just a simple selection of performances by displaying a synchronised transcript alongside the audio, Arden notes for a better understanding, and the option to favourite individual sonnet recitals and make notes of your own. It’s not hard to see how this could be used in schools or even universities to teach the works of Shakespeare, but the true measure of success with this app is the fact that it’s just as enjoyable to watch and be entertained by it outside of the classroom.

The app itself is beautifully made and incredibly slick, making full use of the touchscreen interface with a stunning pinboard of every performer to choose from. In short, The Sonnets is one of those apps that Apple should have no problem using in presentations and at events to show off examples of the iPad at its very best. It might be a tad on the pricey side, but if you’d like to learn more about Shakespeare, we’re hard pressed to think of  better apps out there.

A shining example of an iPad app done well – we’re very impressed.
