Take a high-speed trip through Sega’s golden years

As a faithful representation of the full home console version, this app is further proof that game developers are creating bigger and better games on the iOS format all the time. In terms of content, aesthetics and quality, this is a highly polished effort, with neat handling and a slew of unlockable content that will keep you coming back for more.

Sega fans will be in their element here, as all of the racers are derived from the company’s most treasured licenses. From Sonic himself, to lesser known stars such as Shenmue’s Ryo Hazuki and Beat from Jet Set Radio, there’s fan service galore.

Each track is taken from a Sega game too, and all of them are colourful and well designed. The only issue with this game is that the handling never feels very precise, thanks to a reliance on tilt steering. It takes a while to get used to the sensitivity of turns and the automatic acceleration wrenches some control out of your hands, which is frustrating.

As such, you can’t navigate around tricky obstacles quite as well as you could in the full release, but this one issue aside, the control system holds up okay. As you race in Grand Prix mode you will unlock money for the in-game store, and unlock new tracks, music, characters and more, meaning that there’s plenty of content to keep you playing for a long time.

Rated 5 out of 5

Solid development only slightly marred by a few control issues, but otherwise good fun.
