Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP
Delve into a magical, transcendent adventure game
This is perhaps the most unusual adventure game available for iDevices, evoking a transcendent atmosphere that’s slightly trippy, but totally engrossing.
Load up the game and you won’t find any gameplay instructions, nor any text directing you to press on a menu button. Instead, you’re left to experiment with the on-screen icons; it took us a minute to actually start the game for the first time.
When the game finally does begin you’ll discover a pixelated world filled with objects of interest and unique characters. The graphics have an Apple II era appearance that’s basic on first appearance, but in fact packed with detail and life.
Tap on a background bush for example, and it squashes and rustles under your finger. Tap on a character and they react with surprise. The games navigation controls are entirely touch-based. Tap on an area and the protagonist will walk towards it. Tap and hold and you can guide him in real-time, steering around obstacles and scenery.
On occasion an object can be manipulated by using the magic sword carried in the game character’s backpack. To unleash the sword, you simply need to rotate the iPad into portrait mode whereby he’ll whip out the sword and a shield. This portrait mode is also used to battle various enemies encountered during the game.
Some can be defeated by simply bashing at the sword and shield buttons, but latter enemies require a pattern of moves before they fall under your magic sword.
As you might have already guessed, there’s a heavy magical/fantasy vibe to the game. Without spoiling the story, later in the game you’ll be able to read characters minds and sing songs to solve puzzles.
The sound effects and music are a particularly strong aspect of the game. Musician Jim Guthrie has crafted a wonderful soundtrack that fades in-and-out depending on the players action. We recommend wearing a pair of headphones to really appreciate the beauty of the soundtrack.
Before long you’ll find yourself totally engrossed in the world of Superbrothers. Exploring the mountains and woods is a totally unique experience, and laden with surprises. If you’re looking for an engrossing, relaxing adventure game with a heavy fantasy vibe, make sure to grab this app as soon as possible.
The perfect game for those with time on their hands. It's engrossing, trippy and fun to play. It also has one of the best soundtracks of any iDevice game to date.
