Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Review

Gamers will see the light with this 10th anniversary game, exclusive to iPad

Ten years isn’t a long time when you are dealing with galaxies but it is long enough for us mere humans to get a pang of nostalgia. This is a port of a ten-year-old game that was an incredible success on the Xbox and PC back in 2003. To mark the anniversary of the classic game, it has been released on the iPad.

It’s amazing to see how well it comes across. The Xbox was a very powerful machine in its day and to see the amazing visuals on offer here with console gameplay that hasn’t dated just goes to show the immense capabilities of today’s technology.

As a Star Wars game, you get to see the inevitable opening sequence but it is the game itself that is the true star, not the peripheral bits around it. Although you can’t run this on the iPad 1, the later iPads are more than up to the job as long as you have the storage space. Your reward is an RPG packed with lightsaber battles spread over eight enormous worlds, with a host of characters to interact with.

All of this is set 4,000 years before Anakin Skywalker’s arrival so don’t expect many familiar faces here – not that it makes a difference. The pace of the game and the plot with its engaging narrative keeps the whole thing moving along. In addition to mastering the Force, you choose how your character develops by selecting how they respond to questions. These actions determine whether your character will remain loyal to the Jedi or become a villainous Sith Lord.

Controls can be fiddly at times and they take a bit of getting used to, but you soon adjust. For the price, you are getting an incredible bargain with a great amount of longevity.

Rated 5 out of 5

An undoubted classic that will never go to the dark side of your iPad.
