RollerCoaster Tycoon 4 Mobile Review

The classic PC theme park management game comes to iPhone and iPad

Rollercoaster Tycoon, like Transport Tycoon before it, is one of those titles that has a lot of goodwill associated with it from the days before games were played on smartphones. Rollercoaster Tycoon 4 Mobile n brings the basics of the much-loved game to the iPhone and iPad touchscreens, but something of the subtlety and charm of the original is lost along the way.

The graphics are cartoony and appealing, and there is a lot of fun in planning out your own theme park – not to mention designing your own rollercoasters – but the game is let down significantly in certain areas.

Of course a game has to lose some of its depth when it makes the switch to a smaller screen and a more basic interface, but Rollercoaster Tycoon 4 Mobile comes across as a bit too simplistic. Whether it’s the restrictions on how you can build your rollercoasters, or the easy prompts about what to do next, there’s not much depth here.

You do get a large chunk of money and tickets to get started with (both used as currency within the game), but after a couple of hours you’ll need to shell out cold hard cash or wait eons (in mobile gaming years) for anything to be built. It’s a bright diversion that will fill up some minutes of your spare time, but serious gamers, particularly fans of the original, will come away disappointed.

Rated 3 out of 5

Provides a couple of hours of gaming fun, but there's not much depth or long-term appeal here.
