Prince of Persia The Shadow and the Flame Review
The prince is back in a new action-packed platform adventure
Prince of Persia Shadow & Flame is the latest version of a game that originally debuted in 1989. There have been many versions over the years and even a Hollywood movie spin-off featuring Jake Gyllenhaal. Now old fans and newcomers alike can get their hands on a brand new instalment of this epic adventure.
Many players will be familiar with the action and it doesn’t depart too far from the original, which could be a good or bad thing depending on your viewpoint. It’s more of the same, but it’s still enjoyable. Prince of Persia is a sideways and vertically scrolling platform game and the hero, the prince, must use all his athletic skills to explore dungeons, ruins, caves, temples and so on. The left side of the screen is used to control the direction the prince runs in and the right side is for actions. He can be made to crouch to avoid flying spears and other such dangers, climb up and down walls, wooden ledges and other structures, leap across gaps and traps laid on the floor, and so on.
As you explore each level you’ll find objects that are useful in your quest, like treasure chests containing gold coins, which can be used to purchase extras, health-boosting potions, better weapons, etc. You aren’t alone and in addition to exploration, you have to engage in combat with the bad guys, such as sword-wielding skeletons. Attack and defence moves then become available with flicks and swipes of your right thumb.
There are 14 levels to master and the graphics and animation are good. It doesn’t take long to learn all the controls, and the tasks become progressively more difficult as traps and skeletons have to be dealt with. There are also potions that revive you where you died, so you can continue the adventure rather than have to restart. Some might call it repetitive, but it is still very entertaining to play.
Young and old players will enjoy the exploration and combat action in this popular platform game.
