Odysseus for Kids Review

Homer’s Odyssey has never been this fun and colourful

Homer’s Odyssey, with its war sieges, vengeful gods, cave monsters and evil bird women, may not seem like the perfect education material for six-to-ten-year olds, but the way Odysseus For Kids makes this behemoth of mythology so accessible while keeping its war sieges, vengeful gods, cave monsters and evil bird women is a testament to its quality.

As the Odyssey is such an expansive poem, the decision to abridge it and narrate 15 beautifully animated tableaux of its major events keeps interest flowing throughout for us short-attention-span kids. Fun little challenges and puzzles to advance the story make the user feel a part of the adventure. You have to assemble the Trojan horse, lead Odysseus to his ship and more, through familiar jigsaw-puzzle, memory-matching and replay-the-melody formats.

The design is flawless and the animations fit the story seamlessly. Completing challenges earns you character portraits to put into an album, which helps you get to know the many characters of the Odyssey. The best bit, though, is the map, which reveals real-world locations of these mythical happenings, lending a sense of relatability and a geography lesson at the same time.

Rated 5 out of 5

Odysseus For Kids is the best kind of education app; one where you have too much fun to notice you're learning.
