Max Payne Mobile

Gun-wielding Nostalgia from a man with nothing left to lose

To tie in with the launch of Max Payne 3, Rockstar Games has chosen to revisit the 2001 original on iPad, giving players a chance to become reacquainted with downtrodden cop Max and his trail of bloody revenge. While working on busting up a mafia syndicate and topple a notorious drug ring, Max’s family is killed, and he crosses the line between detective and criminal, waging all-out war on those responsible for his downfall.

Taking a cue from gun-fu action flicks such as Hard Boiled, Max’s main ability is leaping through the air in slow motion unloading with a variety of firearms. The mechanic works well, although it takes a while to line up your shots on the iPad’s touchscreen. This means the amount of time you can enter slow mo is below what you need. Thankfully there is a degree of auto-aim although this removes a great deal of the skill. Either way this is still a solid shooter even today.

Rated 5 out of 5

Quaint, playable and bursting with noir style that will appeal to all, whether new or returning to Payne.
