Icebreaker Hockey

Still breaking backs, this time on ice

Icebreaker is another fine addition to that pile of apps that acts as a fine way to waste some time. A spin-off from the Backbreaker series, the premise is simple: get your player from one end of the rink to the other, and score. Unfortunately, there are a number of angry men from the opposing team in your way, requiring players to jink, twist, sprint and outmanoeuvre their opponents. It’s a score attack game, meaning that the higher your points, the better you’ve done, so you’ll be wanting to hit as many score zones and do as much showboating as possible to push that number through the roof. Just try not to get walloped by the opposition, as the Euphoria physics engine makes those collisions look all too real, and all too painful. It’s even more impressive when you play it in the iPad, HD version.
The controls are simple – tilt to turn, tap on-screen buttons to dodge, sprint, showboat and shoot. It’s responsive and easy to get used to, but there’s rarely time to rest on your laurels. It’s for that very reason that Icebreaker – just like Backbreaker before it – can be almost painfully addictive. The power of ‘just one more go’ is very strong in this one.
Rated 5 out of 5

Just as with the American football equivalent, this is a fun, addictive and cheap distraction.
