Control your Freesat box from your iPhone or iPad with the official free app

This official app offers remote control and recording for Freesat and Freetime set-top boxes once they are paired. This involves creating a Freesat ID on the website and entering the six-digit code from your box there (oddly, it won’t let you do this in-app). You can then use the app – via Wi-Fi or 3G/4G – to set recordings and play existing ones on the TV.

To record a show, either find it in the TV Guide or search for it, tap ‘Record This’ and the information is sent to the box. It works even if the box is in standby mode, although then you need to allow up to 30 minutes for it to register. While it usually offers a choice of recording one episode or the whole series, we found it a bit hit and miss. You can access all the recordings on your box from the Saved Items section.

The TV Guide could be improved, though. It shows Now & Next, while swiping left brings up later shows for a single channel at a time, so it’s difficult to plan your viewing. Swiping right, however, reveals earlier shows on certain channels that you can watch on demand.

A more handy feature is the gesture-controlled playback; tap to pause, swipe left and right to rewind and fast-forward, or up and down to change channel. Or, if you prefer, use the remote-style buttons provided.

Rated 4 out of 5

A handy remote/recording app that works well, although there are still a few issues that need ironing out.
