ElephantBites – Conquering, the Overwhelming Review

Featured as one of Apple’s Best New Apps, ElephantBites for iPhone helps you to get things done, little by little

Have you ever heard the old adage ‘When eating an elephant, take one bite at a time’? No, us neither. Apparently it’s a quote from US Army general Creighton Abrams. It basically amounts to tackling a daunting challenge by taking it one step at a time.

Our first step would be to remove the superfluous comma from the app’s full title (ElephantBites – Conquering, the Overwhelming)! However, we have to admire ElephantBites’ eye-catching and appealing design. Each multi-step project is assigned a colourful elephant head and upon completing one, you are awarded a trophy to celebrate the achievement.

It’s all very simple to use. After choosing an elephant head and naming your new project, you add a series of ‘bites’ – the small steps that make up the overall task. For decorating a room, for instance, you might include covering furniture, sanding and painting the woodwork, and painting the ceiling and walls. It is here that a major flaw becomes apparent.

Many projects will involve a logical sequence of steps that should be done in a particular order. However, the app automatically adds each step to the top of the list as you input them. So if you enter them in sequence, you end up with a list in reverse order. While you can rearrange the steps afterwards, by dragging and dropping, it’s a bit of a chore. It would be better if there were an option to add items to the bottom of the list.

Once a project is entered, you simply swipe right to cross off a newly completed task – or left to delete it. Unfortunately, there’s no way to sync task lists with other devices, nor can they be shared. In addition, the app doesn’t even support notifications, so you can’t receive any reminders to do tasks.

While attractive and easy to use, it’s essentially a very basic to-do list app.
