Ascendancy

Control the universe from the comfort of your iPhone

Ascendancy is a port of a classic PC strategy game from Logic Factory, and was first released in 1995. 16 years later, and it’s now been updated for iOS, and the end result is an utterly absorbing title that’s just as addictive as it was when it was first released.

Playing one of 21 distinct races, the aim of Ascendancy is to become the dominant life force. This is achieved by building up your planet’s population, deciding what technologies your race will learn, and much more.

As your race grows in power, you’ll be able to build shipyards, create spaceships, and eventually move on to colonise other planets. Colonisation can be done peacefully by simply settling on unoccupied planets, or you can attempt to declare war on the other races in order to secure already populated locations.

It’s a truly addictive experience thanks to the sheer amount of options that are available, as well as the challenging AI, but it’s not without a few issues.

Our biggest concern with Ascendancy is that the tutorial is a real mess, making it really hard to initially make any progress. Get over this massive roadblock, however, and you’ll discover an incredibly satisfying strategy title that just keeps giving and giving. Highly recommended.

Rated 4 out of 5

The tutorial scuppers things somewhat, but this is still a truly great strategy game.
