On the fence about a tattoo idea? Try this app first

Getting a tattoo is a pretty hefty commitment, and anyone considering it really has to make sure their chosen design is something they won’t regret further down the line, especially considering the pain barrier that you have to get through – presumably with gritted teeth – to get the whole process done.

Unfortunately, it’s almost impossible to tell just how well a tattoo will look once the job is done, and barring costly laser surgery, the effects are almost impossible to reverse. So if you’re nervously considering investing in some body art, then trust the iPhone to have just the app you’re looking for. AR Tattoos lets users map tons of brilliant designs onto their body by using their iPhone camera.

It’s a simple process that involves selecting a design, scaling and rotating it to your specifications, and holding it over your desired body location. Once the pattern is lined up exactly where you intend to have your tattoo applied, simply tap the snapshot button, and your would-be tattoo is then stored in your photo album.

Each of the eight design categories are packed with colourful and greyscale designs that include dragons, tribal patterns and simple shapes that can be layered to create something more detailed.

While the app works well, you will definitely need a second person to help you take the photos for you, especially if you’re lining up back tattoos. And if you’re seeking an entirely original design, then your options for seeing it in place are limited. Otherwise, it’s a neat use of AR technology.

While it may not be to everyone’s tastes, it does give you a good idea of how your own designs would match up.
