Stop worrying about video file formats and conversion – Air Video can do all that for you. Just sit back and watch…

No-one watches television in the traditional way any more, right? We download episodes of our favourite programmes from BBC iPlayer, or catch a new movie trailer downloaded from the internet. But getting all these video files, with varying formats and bit-rates, on to your iPhone has been a bit of a faff – until now, that is.

AirVideo is the answer to all our prayers. With this app installed on your iPhone, and its server equivalent downloaded for Mac or PC, you can gain access to all the video you have stored on your computer from wherever you are.

The server software sets up your computer for you, so you don’t have to mess around with the technical aspects, and you simply point the program to your video folders. You can also point it to your iTunes collection of Video Podcasts, Trailers and TV episodes (although it won’t play DRM-protected videos). Then you’re all set to go roaming.

The system works a treat through a home Wi-Fi network. The AirVideo app finds your computer instantly, and brings up thumbnails of all the available videos.

Some videos can be played instantly, while some need conversion into the correct format for iPhone –and that’s where Air Video gets really clever. You can set up a queue of conversions that will copy the videos to your iPhone for later viewing, or you can have the app convert videos on-the-fly instantly. This is great news for users, as it means no more laborious waiting times!

The app will also crop an image, and you can zoom in on videos and customise its conversion settings to suit your own tastes. Even more exciting is the fact you can configure the server software and app to share videos through the 3G network – which means you’ll have access to your video collection, no matter where you are.

There are certainly some improvements that can be made to the app – a search facility would be useful for those with hundreds of videos on their computers – but the developer seems to be listening to all the feedback it gets, so that should only be a matter of time.
