Takes National Geographic to the next level

Avid readers of the National Geographic magazine will be thrilled; the magazine has been recreated in this fully-fledged, special edition iPad app that stands on its own as one of the best examples of how digital magazines can be made for the modern readers.

Marking the 7 Billion population milestone that the planet passed last year, the app mixes the fantastically written articles that are normally presented in National Geographic with videos, images and infographics that help to keep everything tied together perfectly. The amount of content in this app is incredible, and the articles huge and interesting, discussing what the increasing population could mean for the world. The topics discussed range from what led to and caused the population boom in the last few centuries, to what the results might be.

The way readers interact with the app is a little confusing at first, as there are no actual contents in the traditional sense. Instead, a bar appears along the bottom when you touch the screen, and allows you to progress through the articles in order, but each article can be scrolled through. This means that while you flick through stories from left to right, you will need to swipe up and down through individual pages within a story. It will soon become second nature.

£2.99 is about right for a digital magazine, but this one is a bit different, and well worth some of your time.

Rated 5 out of 5

A huge amount of content, presented brilliantly. Give it a try – you won’t be disappointed.
