Workflow: Powerful Automation Made Simple Review

Become an iOS power user with a few swipes with this new automation tool

If you’ve ever used IFTTT web service or the phone app then you’ll have some idea of where Workflow is coming from. If you haven’t, here’s a quick explainer: Workflow ties together different apps and actions on your iPhone or iPad and lets you automate processes that would otherwise take dozens of taps or complicated scripts to complete. Finished workflows can be pinned to your home screen and run on demand, as well as integrated into other apps as extensions.

Make sense? Perhaps the best way of explaining Workflow is to give you some examples of what it can do. You can automatically turn three photos into a GIF and tweet the results; you can pull up lyrics for the song that’s currently playing; you can get the travel time to home from your current location with a single tap; you can upload your most recent photo to Dropbox, or post it to Instagram, or send it to Facebook, and so on and so on. Part of the fun is experimenting with the app.

It’s for people who want to become power users in the most intuitive way possible, and there’s lots to like about Workflow: it’s polished, it’s smart, it lets you do more with your phone (or tablet) and the gallery of example workflows is a great way to get started with the app. If you enjoy tinkering around with your iDevice then you’re going to find this is money well spent.

It’s not perfect though, and it won’t appeal to everyone. Even with the tutorial and galleries it isn’t all too clear how different actions might fit together in your workflows. Make any mistakes and the drag-and-drop script you’ve put together will simply fail without so much as an error alert. Nevertheless, it’s a largely impressive app, particularly in the way in which it integrates with iOS — contacts, maps, documents, music, photos and videos are all available to you.

Rated 4 out of 5

An app that could genuinely change the way you use your phone or tablet.
