Save the world from infectious diseases in Pandemic: The Board Game for iPad

The real Pandemic Board Game costs about £27 from Amazon, but for just under £5 you can play it on the iPad, which might seem a bargain too good to be true. It is a faithful reproduction though, and the gameplay and graphics are just like the real thing but transferred to the touchscreen.

Designed for two to four players, Pandemic is unlike other games in that you work co-operatively as a team to beat the game, rather than compete to beat other players. This means that it works as a single-player game too, with you taking the other players’ turns.

The game is played on a world map on which the major cities are highlighted. There are four virulent diseases infecting certain cities and you are part of a team of people trying to eradicate the contagions. Each member has different abilities and four actions can be taken per turn. They could travel to a city, cure the infection there, and so on. Cards are dealt on each turn and collecting the right ones enables a cure to be found for a disease. The aim is to cure all four of the diseases to beat the game.

If you have played the board game you’ll be right at home with the iPad app in no time at all. Newcomers could well struggle with the game’s complex rules, however, and with a multi-page manual that is essential reading, the first hour isn’t much fun. Don’t give up though – this is a great game that will keep you engaged.

Rated 4 out of 5

This multiplayer board game works as well in single-player mode as it does in multiplayer, and is very entertaining.
