Looptical Review

Looptical for iPhone is the music recording studio that fits in your pocket

Developer MooCowMusic has a track record of producing first-class music apps and Looptical is no exception. It is amazing what it is capable of in the hands of an expert – a visit to the website to watch the video demos is strongly recommended. Our own efforts, sadly, do not come even close, but that’s not the fault of the app, but a comment on our own musical abilities.

The app provides a range of instruments and you can add piano, guitar, bass, organ and other tracks. A 128-key keyboard can be displayed in single or dual mode and there is a special guitar interface that lets you pick or strum chords, plus an arpeggiator that turns chords into a sequence of notes. Up to 24 stereo tracks can be created and recording loops makes up a song. A loop bank is then used to combine, merge and repeat these to build up the song. An external keyboard can also be used and the iPhone’s microphone can be used for recording sounds or vocals too.

A mixing desk and effects enable you to put the finishing touches to the song, while Overdrive, Bit Crusher, Compressor, EQ, Filter, Chorus/Flanger, Phaser, Trance Gate, Delay and other effects can be applied as well. The price may be high, but it’s actually worth every penny.

Rated 4 out of 5

Looptical is a powerful tool for anyone with a little musical ability. It’s expensive, but good.
