Being able to create music is amazing. Being able to do so on the go with your phone or tablet is even more so. While this app from Fruityloops Studio is pricey, it packs in so much that you begin to realise it could be seen as actually rather cheap.

This digital audio-creation app allows you to use drum machines and different instruments in order to create some excellent tunes – and it does so with an interface that is intuitive and easy to navigate, not to mention lovely to look at.

But it is the actual guffins under the hood that really counts here, and there are certainly a good number of options. You can use the built-in sequencer for step-by-step entering of compositions. You can also use a virtual piano keyboard. There are 133 instruments in total, including drum kits and sliced-loop beats, and there are some great drum pads to bash.

As you get to grips with the software, you start to realise the depth. It is possible to alter the volume of instruments and notes. There are options to apply delay, overdrive and filter as well as reverb effects. It’s fair to say that you will need to spend a fair bit of time getting around the options and working out what things do and how they do it. That is more due to the packed nature of it, however, although there are some hidden features lurking around that could have been made slightly more prominent.

The sound quality is amazing, though, and you have a lot at your fingertips. There are 50 synthesiser voices and these are neatly separated out. It would be good if you could add your own sounds or at least alter the ones that are already built in, but this is not possible; certainly not in the current version anyway. It’s a bit of a bind having to stick to what is there without having that extra freedom. You do reach a point, before too long, where you are desperate for a particular sound but you just can’t get it. While this could be a serious disadvantage for some, it wouldn’t put us off returning.

Professional but with some limitations, this will have you knocking out some great tunes.
