Battle of the Bulge Review

Battle of the Bulge Review

Intense WWII conflict on your iPad

It will take only a few moments of opening Battle of the Bulge to realise that this is not your average war game. These days there tends to be a lot of ‘shoot  rst, ask questions later’ style of games, but this game couldn’t be further from that. The setting is the infamous battle of the same name from the Second World War, and players have the choice to play as either the Axis or Allied troops. It is recommended the attacking Axis side is tried rst by new players in order to grasp the nuances of the game.

These nuances are one of the best aspects of the gameplay, as users have to not only think about the movement of their troops in general, but also take into account terrain and presence or lack of roads that could hinder organisation. Both sides have their keys to victory too, with the Axis needing to advance but keep open supply lines, while the Allies must perfect the art of holding out for reinforcements in order to keep the enemy at bay.

This is deep strategy gaming backed up by smooth and simple point and tap controls, and board game style tiles to represent each of your units. The game in essence is a marriage of traditional board games and digital warfare, and it’s completely engrossing.

Rated 5 out of 5

With a deep campaign and thoughtful opponents, this is mobile strategy gaming at its absolute finest. A must buy.
