Bad Piggies Best Egg Recipes for iPad Review
Is Rovio’s new offering eggciting or simply fowl? Either way, no one’s yolking
Announced the same week as Angry Birds Star Wars, the Bad Piggies Best Egg Recipes cookbook passed many fans by. However, with 41 recipes and interactive elements, this app shouldn’t be overlooked.
If you’ve ever been addicted to slingshotting fat red pigeons at green pigs, this app from Rovio Entertainment will have an obvious attraction for you. Interactive illustrations of Angry Birds and Bad Piggies run throughout.
However, if you have never played any of the games in the Angry Birds/Bad Piggies franchise, is this iPad app worthwhile? The answer is, surprisingly, yes. While the added features, including an egg timer, the ability to bookmark pages, and social media integration to share pictures of your dishes are rather pedestrian, the recipes themselves are great.
The app is based on the hardback cookbook of the same name, which won Best First Cookbook of the Year at the 2012 Gourmand World Cookbook Awards. Admittedly some of the recipes are predictable, such as how to make an omelette or poached eggs, but there are also some inspired inclusions, such as cheese and egg soufflé, hollandaise sauce, and sorbet. Each dish also comes with fullscreen photography that makes the mouth water and gives you an idea of what to aim for when cooking.
The functionality of the app is fluid, with easily swiped step-by-step instructions. The index makes it easy to look up recipes quickly, and a choice of imperial and metric measurements is useful. Though, perhaps it would have been helpful to include nutritional info with each dish as well.
As much for egg aficionados as Angry Birds addicts, this offers more than just brand extension.
